In 1981, the first steps were taken to introduce competition into the UK telecommunications industry. Mercury Communications Ltd - a subsidiary of Cable & Wireless - were the first to be licensed to compete with British Telecom and, in 1988, they opened their public payphone service. They choose to provide payphones that would only take credit and phone cards to avoid all the problems of cash handling.
