The UAX13 at Avoncroft is a memorial to the very successful Strowger exchange switching system. The equipment and building was transported from Stapleford, Essex, which was London's very last Strowger exchange.
The Post Office set the standard for the manufacture of Strowger equipment known as the 2000 type, and in its heyday this equipment could be found throughout the world.
The equipment at Stapleford dates back to 1956 (grey equipment) and as the exchange grew into the 1960s, cream-coloured equipment became the norm.
